Saccharin sodium is a powdered artificial sweetner with no food value (no calories). The saccharin is approximately 300–400 times as sweet as normal table sugar and was used to sweeten drinks, food, and medications. It is very similar to the present day sweetner, aspartame. The only side effect of saccharin sodium as a sweetner was its characteristic bitter or metallic aftertaste, causing it to fall out of commercial use. The sweetner was sold in 4oz metal containers.
