Flaxseed meal was used in the early 20th century as a poultice. It was added to boiling water to make a thick paste, applied to a sterile cloth and applied to the wounded area.

Whole flaxseed was used in the treatment of prostate problems, high blood pressure, to regulate mensturation, promoting ovulation, asthma, headaches, and arthritis. The flaxseed is put into boiling water, steeped for about one hour and then strained, making a kind of tea.
