Description / History:
In this collection there are three cobalt blue glass cylinder bottles with rusting tin lids. Cobalt blue, hand-blown glass dates to about the 1840s and typically caried some type of syrup. Two of the bottles have no label and have no product remaining in the bottles. The third bottle, however, contains a printed label from Canis Pharmacy with the words "Syrup IPECAC" handwritten on the bottle and is approximately a third full of syrup.

The ingredients of ipecac syrup are dried roots from the ipecacuanha plant along with glycerin, methylparaben, and sugar syrup. The purpose of ipecac is to induce vomitting by irritating the lining of the stomach.

This collection of bottles came with the Pharmacy shelf in the EHMHF main display at Burle Industries and was purchased by the Edward Hand Medical Heritage Foundation from Canis Pharmacy.
